Wet weather conditions can significantly increase the risk of white mold (Sclerotinia stem rot) in soybeans. This disease thrives in cool, moist environments – and many of Federated’s service areas have seen just that.
It’s important to plan fungicide applications now – so you are ready when the soybean plants hit the R2 to R3 stage. Application timing at “full flower is ideal,” said Kevin Carlson, Federated’s agronomy sales manager, “or at the back side of full flower” is considered the best time to apply a fungicide such as Miravis Neo®.
Soybean fields with a history of white mold are especially vulnerable; the fungus resides in the soil. A dense canopy on the soybean field can hasten the development of the disease.
Likewise, corn fields with a history of tar spot should be looking at fungicide treatments as well. Tar spot is another foliar disease that attacks with the “correct” weather.
Fungicides can be effective, but they require accurate timing to ensure maximum effectiveness. Scout diligently for early signs of infection, especially during wet periods. The white, cottony growth of white mold is rather easy to identify, but your Federated Agronomist is ready to help. Get ready to apply your fungicide at R2 to R3.
