Fertilize Alfalfa To Maintain Stand

Jun 25, 2025

High-value alfalfa benefits from an added fertilizer application between cuttings.
“It has been a challenge to get that first crop harvested,” said Craig Loen, ag sales rep at the Osceola location. Growers who missed the small window of time around Memorial Day struggled to get dry bales.

Dairy alfalfa is already moving into harvest of second crop, Loen noted. And that means it’s time to replace the nutrients removed from the soil during harvest. “We need to maintain high levels of P, K, S, and boron in the soil solution,” he said, “to help maintain high-quality milk and cow health.

Alfalfa is a high-value crop, but to ensure the crop’s high feed value remains intact requires a good shot of fertilizer between the second and third cuttings.

Fertilizer at this point in the season will “maintain the stand, crown health, and longevity of the crop,” said Loen.

“Applying DAP, potash, and a sulfur source (AMS or SO4) is a good recommendation,” he said, “and don’t forget about adding boron to the mix; it is a reproductive nutrient.”
