Ag universities and companies offer free tools to support the farm budgeting process. Spreadsheets and apps make it possible to plug in costs to figure out the true cost of farm operations.

Compeer Financial, for example, has a Grain Margin Manager spreadsheet that provides a break-even cost matrix after entering farm expenses such as land rent, machinery, input, trucking, and insurance costs.
