Supplement Your Thorough Pre-emerge with Post

Feb 24, 2026

Post-emerge spraying makes pre-emerge more effective.
“We try to avoid spraying rescue missions,” said Mike Slater, Federated agronomy sales rep. “And with a good pre- and post-emerge program, you can avoid it!”

The best post programs start with a good pre-emerge or early post application with good residuals. Typically, a good, planned post pass will occur roughly 30 days after the pre-emerge. “We want to start clean and stay clean,” said Slater. “If you feel like you’re too early, you’re more than likely on time, and if it feels like you’re on time, you’re probably too late.”

Two of Federated’s most common post-emerge programs are Enlist One™ or glufosinate. “The top tier is both of them together,” Slater said. “Each one has its best places, though. Enlist tends to work better on giant ragweed, whereas glufosinate tends to work better on waterhemp.”

Glyphosate is typically added to the tank mix for grass control and additional help with broadleaf weeds, along with another layer of a residual herbicide such as metolachlor or acetachlor.

“Always remember to scout and walk the fields,” Slater said. “A 55-mph drive-by scout doesn’t tell you much, other than that you’re too late.”
