Sulfur Deficiencies Cropping Up

Jul 11, 2023

“We are seeing an increase in sulfur deficiency due to our weather environment,” said Kevin Carlson, Federated’s agronomy sales manager.

“While bigger corn finds sulfur [in the soil] with deeper roots, sulfur is not mobile in the plant – wherever it is in the plant, it stays in the plant,” he said.

In other words, you can have a sulfur deficiency not visible in the older leaves, but very apparent in the newer leaves (see photo of yellow striping from sulfur deficiency vs. solid green leaves on the same plant).

“We will be talking about this at Plot Days,” Carlson said, “and we will have a grower’s story about an experiment relating to sulfur with intriguing results.”

Check your corn – new leaves and old – and see if the telltale signs of sulfur deficiency are present. Talk to your Federated Agronomist with any questions.
