Observations From the Field . . .

Soybeans with good pre-emerge weed control
Your Federated custom applicators have been dodging persistent rainfall while trying to get post-emerge herbicides applied.

The fields that received a good pre-emerge herbicide application are showing the value of pre-emerge under current weather conditions. “It’s a huge, huge – huge – deal!” said Kevin Carlson, Federated’s agronomy sales manager. The pre -emerge herbicides got to work on weeds before the weather delays, and the fields show it (see photo).

At this point in the season, “we should all be talking about post-emerge weed control and getting our orders entered into FieldAlytics.” said Carlson.

And then, talk about nutrients, especially nitrogen (N), which has been lost with the rain. “The wetter weather is why we put split our nitrogen applications. It’s the leading recommendation . . . and it’s agronomically and environmentally correct,” said Carlson.

If your fields have received a lot of rain, you will certainly need to apply more N to avoid yield loss.

Most importantly, get out and check your fields. “It’s the scouting season,” said Carlson. See what’s happening with the weeds and potential diseases. Then talk to your Federated Agronomist about what you’ve found.
