Protecting fertilizer investments is a “hot topic,” according to Rob Johnson of Rosen’s. And, when it comes to impact on yield, protecting nitrogen (N) is at the top of the list.
With fertilizer prices on the rise, stabilizing nitrogen ensures it’s available to the plants when they need it. “About 80% of the corn plant’s nitrogen needs are within the first 75 days after emergence,” said Johnson.
Factor® Plus, a urease inhibitor, is a nitrogen stabilizer that can help reduce N loss; its active ingredient is NBPT. Johnson said, “Nitrogen loss can be up to 25% in 10 days on untreated nitrogen. With Factor Plus, you can reduce that loss to less than 2%.”
Federated recommends Factor Plus in a variety of applications: with urea or UAN, preplant, top dress, or side dress. “It is very flexible,” Johnson added. Factor Plus can protect against volatility for up to 14 days (assuming no tillage or rain).
