IT’S THE RIGHT TIME FOR FALL AG LIME

According to Craig Peterson, Federated agronomist at the Ogilvie location, here are the best reasons to apply ag lime in the fall:

1. Field conditions. Fields are generally in better condition in the fall, making it easier to get into the fields to apply lime. Spring snow melt impedes lime applications.
2. Time. You have more time in the fall than in the spring when the planter beckons! By the time the fields are dry enough for lime application in the spring, you will want to plant, not apply lime, and Federated is very busy too. Any ag lime (or other fertilizer) application in the fall makes planting much smoother – for everyone.
3. Tillage. Fall-applied lime can be worked into the soil – again, because there’s time – which gives the lime a chance to break down and start working sooner in the spring.
4. Road restrictions. Lime and fertilizer deliveries are often hampered by road restrictions. Fall has none, making it a great time for fertilizer and lime applications.

When you are ready to proceed with ag lime, determine what your fields need with a current soil sample, and then talk to your Federated Agronomist for lime and fertilizer recommendations. Don’t wait. Your crops will thank you for the nutrients, your yields will thank you for the boost, and your spring will be a little less harried because you already applied lime and/or fertilizer.
