Investing in Seed Treatment Yields Good ROI

No one can predict exactly how this spring’s weather will play out, but soybean seed treatment sets things up for success even if the weather wanders off average.

“Seed treatments are an investment into your crop [that give] it the best chance to survive in tough spring conditions,” said Karson Schoening, Federated ag sales rep in Ogilvie.

Soybean seed treatments can lead to quicker and more consistent emergence,” he said, “which helps the plants compete with weeds and other environmental factors.” And, faster emergence often translates to better crop growth in the critical early stages.

Seed treatments provide protection against diseases such as fusarium and phytophthora. And though there is an upfront cost for seed treatments, “the ROI is often significant due to the enhanced protection and improved yield,” said Schoening. When disease and pest are a concern, “the extra protection [from the seed treatment] provides higher profitability.”

“Healthy plants that emerge early and grow vigorously typically produce higher yields,” he said. Seed treatments optimize growth under a variety of growing conditions and reduce risks from disease—all of which lead to a more profitable harvest.
