Ag lime is an often-overlooked investment that can have great ROI, and right now is the best time to apply it.
“Lime is drier in the fall,” said Federated Osceola location manager Ryan Peterson. “You’re not paying for water weight, which makes it an even better investment. Plus, the fields aren’t muddy, the road restrictions aren’t as stringent, and –to be very honest– we have more time in the fall to apply it compared to spring.”

- Increase the availability of nutrients to the plant
- Enhance the effectiveness of some herbicides
- Improve the physical and biological properties of the soil
- Balance pH, which is just as important as a proper fertilizer nutrient plan
- Adds calcium and magnesium to the soil
- Fine ag lime needs about one full year to be fully activated into the soil, so the sooner the better
- Coarse ag lime needs about two full years to be fully activated into the soil

“I’d recommend getting a soil sample before you apply,” Peterson said. “Don’t let your pH get out of hand; sample your soil often. It's easier on you and your pocketbook to spread 2 ton/acre rather than waiting and end up spreading 4 ton/acre. Have a plan to spread X tons of lime per year or X acres per year so you don’t fall behind.”
