Execute Planting Plans, Communicate, and Take Notes

May 09, 2022

Soils are warming, planters are going, stay in touch with your Federated Agronomist.
“With the cool spring,” said Mike Slater, Federated agronomy sales rep at the Isanti location, “there’s isn’t much corn to scout … but the extended forecast looks promising and busy for Federated.”

As you hit the fields with the planter, “make sure your crop plans are in place with your Federated Agronomist,” he said, adding that should include your herbicide programs.

“Growers need a plan A, B, and C” this year with the tight chemical supplies, he said, adding that picking up or taking delivery on products early is extra helpful this year.

“The planting window is getting smaller so everything is going to be going nonstop,” he said.

Remember these key points:
  • Communication is critical to avoid errors.
  • Check seed depth and spacing – and ground temp – before the planters roll.
    • Anything less than 50 degrees means wait. Let it warm up. “A perfect stand will outyield a bad stand 9 times out of 10,” said Slater.
  • Keep good records: hybrids, plant populations, locations, fertilizer applications, additives – everything! (Growers using Climate FieldView™, a grower-based precision ag app from Bayer®, will benefit from its ease and convenience for recordkeeping.)
  • Conventional corn growers: Be sure to let Federated know right away so we can get the pre-merge herbicides on.

Make it a point to regularly connect with your Federated Agronomist as this season takes off!
