Corn Yields Up and Down Just Like the Weather

Nov 21, 2022

2022 corn yields were up and down like the weather
Like the weather this fall – some very high and some very low temps – the corn yields were wide ranging in Federated’s service areas. With yields of just over 100 bu./ac. to 200+ bu./ac. it’s hard to make any broad generalizations about this year’s crop.

“Most of the harvest is getting close to the finish line, if not complete,” said Craig Loen, Federated agronomist at the Osceola location, noting that the yield ranges were very dependent on rainfall – or lack thereof.

Additionally, planting dates played into the yield equation. “Final test weights and dry down moistures were also affected by the weather this year,” he said.

“It’s a good time to analyze your varieties [post harvest] … stands, harvestability, standability, moisture, and test weights, along with yields,” said Loen. “Every field is different,” he noted, and corn varieties were put to the test with the weather conditions Minnesota and western Wisconsin endured (or enjoyed) this year.

Federated’s Discovery Plots revealed their own pros and cons, and that data is available here. Answer Plot® data by Winfield® United is available here.
