Charting the Seed You Need
Feb 10, 2026
By now, you likely know what traits you want in your corn hybrid. But with so many options available, how do you choose the hybrid that’s right for you at the right price? That’s where your Federated agronomist comes in.
“Say you want above and below-ground protection, or rootworm protection,” said Sam Johnson, Federated ag sales rep from our Albertville location. “It’s our job to walk you through a corn technologies comparison chart to find what you need. It’s a comprehensive look at everything on the market.”
“There are a lot of traits that share common characteristics,” said Jake Anderle, of Legend Seeds. “For instance, a lot of traits cover corn borer, but not every trait that has above-ground protection necessarily protects against black cutworm. What our chart does is break down and dissect what they’re actually getting when they purchase a hybrid with a specific trait package.”
As with anything, the more premium the product, the more expensive it can be. But Federated can help you find the right solution for your acres and your budget. “You do have flexibility in price when looking at the same hybrid and the kind of protection you want,” Johnson said. “Some, of course, only come in one option. But there’s usually a choice.”
Most growers will opt for above- and below-ground protection for corn-on-corn. For rotated acres, you can likely use above-ground only. But either way, there are options for you, whether you want a conventional option with no traits for insects or something more comprehensive.
Johnson offers a few of the more popular trait options:
