Apply Ag Lime Before Tillage

Oct 11, 2023

Spread ag lime before tillage
Current soil test results make it easy to know which fields need ag lime and “as the crops come off we can drop the lime loads and spread right away,” said Brad Hipsag, Federated ag sales rep out of Ogilvie.

If soil testing hasn’t been done recently, “let us know when the crop is off so we can soil sample undisturbed soil and get a true top six inches of soil,” he said.

Once the ag lime is applied, it should be worked in with tillage “so the chemical reaction between the lime and the soil can take place,” said Hipsag. Therefore, as much as possible, delay tillage until after lime is applied.
