Plans Change. Weed Pressure Doesn’t.

pre-emerge herbicides essential to soybean weed control
In this compressed planting season, don’t lose sight of your weed control plan for your soybean fields.

“As always, put a pre-emerge herbicide down,” said Rod Gustafson, Federated agronomist at the Albertville location. “That’s our #1 recommendation.”

With the late planting, it’s likely that growers “will take out the first or second flush of weeds with tillage,” said Gustafson, but that doesn’t preclude the need for herbicide applications, starting with pre-emerge.

Gustafson emphasized that it’s still a good practice to put down a pre-emerge herbicide such as Sonic® or Authority® within three days of planting. If that timing doesn’t work and the soybeans are up, use a metolachlor product for pre-emerge.

Things were slow in the Albertville area last week, Gustafson noted, but once the soybeans are in the ground the weeds will pop.

Within 25-30 days of applying the pre-emerge or early post herbicides, “you can start spraying your first post application – that’s pretty typical,” said Gustafson. Federated is recommending the Enlist® program, especially on fields with waterhemp pressure.

Whether it’s pre, post, or a combination of the two, your herbicide choices do affect yields. If your plan A has already gone by the wayside, move to plan B and talk to your Federated Agronomist with questions about herbicide choices.
